The Legendary Actor Christopher Lee Dies at Age 93
The legendary actor is best known for his roles as Dracula and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings franchise.
In an official statement, the actor’s family confirmed that Christopher Lee died on Sunday June 7th, at age 93, after being hospitalized for breathing difficulties. The veteran actor will be remembered for portraying roles of Hollywood bad guys that we just adore, among which are the roles of Saruman in The Lord of the Rings, Dracula (which he played 10 times!), Frankenstein, Francisco Scaramango in the Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun, and Count Dooku in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
During the last decade he also worked with Tim Burton in Dark Shadows, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland.
What many don’t know is that he was also a member of the Special Forces in the British Army and that he participated in WWII.
Looks like the famous Hollywood bad guy was really badass. In an interview Lee said:
“I was attached to the SAS from time to time but we are forbidden at any time to discuss specific operations. Let’s just say I was in the Special Forces and leave it at that.”
During the war he served in operations in Finland, after which he was stationed in North Africa, where he took part in the offensive on Sicily and Italy. He saw Nazi death camps first hand and there are hints that after the war, for a while, he was hunting down the remaining Nazi officers. Hollywood tough guys don’t have nothin’ on him!
While filming The Lord of the Rings there was a scene where Saruman (portrayed by Lee) is being stabbed in the back, and Peter Jackson wanted Lee to scream during that particular scene. The veteran actor replied:
“Peter, have you ever heard the sound a man makes when he is stabbed in the back?” Jackson obviously responded “No”. – “Well, I have and I know what to do,” Lee replied.
Another example of Lee’s perseverance and talent is the serious of heavy metal albums he recorded, with his last one released when he was 88 years-old!
In 2009 he was knighted for his services to charity and drama.
This acting legend will surely be missed by many, and his roles, which he brilliantly portrayed, will be forever remembered.
