24 Best Bands of the ‘90s – The Definitive List

By  |

The ‘90s were a blossoming period both for fashion and music. After the lucrative ‘80s when pop and rock started ruling the charts, the ‘90s brought a new kind of revolution. Rock and pop continued developing in new directions, but other genres emerged such as hip hop, R&B, as well as many types of electronic music.

But the best music product of the ‘90s must be the bands, so let’s see which 24 bands topped the charts and smashed our cassette players.

1. Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode is an electronic rock band from the ‘80s that continued to rock the scene in the ‘90s as well. They practically opened the decade by releasing their hit single Enjoy the Silence in January 1990. With their album Violator they gained worldwide fame and they reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. Suddenly, everybody knew who they were.

Upon releasing their next album Songs of Faith and Devotion the band entered a crisis. Lead singer Dave Gahan started using drugs and nearly overdosed at one point, other band members fell into depression and alcoholism and the band was on the brink of falling apart. But they pulled through and managed to record their next album and release it in 1997.

The band has sold more than 100 million records altogether and even got the flattering title of “the most popular electronic band the world has ever known”.
